piabo's Reviews (301)

I was a bit sceptical because of some bad ratings, but I really loved this book.
Yes, it is also very political and does not talk through every possible way of getting rid of stress. But I think it does not make any sense to try to become less stressed in a world that is made to make women (and people in general) feel like they have to give up their wellbeing without understanding how the patriarchy (urgh) / the system affects them.

Similar to "Anti-Diet", the political view was very relevant and helped me incredibly well to accept what is going on with me.

This book also takes, in my opinion, a way better approach to intersectionalism and explicitly mentions how there are unique challenges for LGBTQI+ and BIPOC people.

I read the first chapters and realized that less than fifty percent of ADD characteristics apply to me. So I guess I don't have it. The search for my inability to focus for long and insurmountable procrastination will continue.

I only skimmed the final chapters and listened to the abridged audiobook version. Generally recommend it for anyone who feels spoken to from the title and thinks/knows they might live with ADD / ADHD.

Fungi are super cool. And seemingly everywhere and also very crucial to much of life. Wow.

Really like the writing style.
At some points I didn't know what the story is exactly about, maybe because of the many characters?

Still, I really like the writing style.
Don't like books that are so long.

I honestly found it a bit boring. But still lots of interesting fun facts.

Bryson seems to be scientifically rigorous, but often states assumptions or non-scientifically proven quotes that made me very much confused. He was honest that those are just assumptions but with so much new information it is difficult to hold each with the right tag in my mind (e.g. scientific vs non-scientific).

**read it again and then went to the second part of the play in London (I am too broke to buy tickets for both).
I now definitely like it more! It's actually quite nice.
After first read: 2 stars. Now 3**

Accidentally reading a fanfiction put me in the mood to finally read this book/play.
And I must say I am disappointed. It didn't feel like this book added anything. Yes, I got to know a few more characters and really tiny details that weren't known before. And some unresolved things got the chance to be addressed.
But there was nothing new. No new wizarding phenomena, no new people and important connections. There kind of were some revelations, but they did not really feel genuine. It felt like they were just serving a plot.

I expected more.

Ups. I really did not want to reread this. It was an accident, I swear.
Let's hope I don't have to reread the entire series.

Can someone make me stop re-reading these? :/

This book made me drop out of high school at the age of 15. No regrets!
