I absolutely loved this book, while it took me a long time to read compared to my other books I feel like it was worth it.

I loved that it was all about science, and how one would prove mermaids exist with science. Now I know very little about those fields of science so I have no idea how accurate said science was but nothing really sounded outrageous or wrong by the very little I do in fact know this stuff.

It had a fairly inclusive cast, and while I don't necessary care about that sort of thing enough to seek it out, it was rather refreshing to have both lgbt and people on the autism spectrum without this being a big deal. One character was revealed to have autism, nobody blinked an eye. One character was revealed to be into girls, nobody blinked an eye. It was almost frustrating how heavy it focused on the negative aspects of being deaf. As there were twin deaf girls on the boat and I felt the book focused SO much on the issues of being deaf, the disrespect others show deaf people, and so on that it.. almost felt unbalanced. If you understand what I mean.

Otherwise the only real negative thing I can say about this is the ending was rather anticlimactic to me. And let's not speak about how this is an mostly-all american crew and seemingly the only ones who decided to bring any weapons was the hired guards. If there had been a single footnote about it not being legal to bring extra weapons I could be like "cool", that it was stated in their contract or something. But here you had a bunch of character who fully believed they'd meet murderous mermaids and not once thought that maybe, just MAYBE, they'd attack this crew like they did the crew 7 years ago? I refuse to believe that every single person of the 400 on that boat is an anti-violence, anti-gun, kind of person. And even if you brought no weapons, once the killing started and you're standing there spouting how you want to kill them all, and you DON'T go to the kitchen to take a knife to carry around with you? A little silly imo.

Promising start, extremely boring after awhile. Only reason I didn't DNF it was because of the yearly r/fantasy bingo
