This book would have been perfect. If the L-bomb hadn't dropped two days in.
Alright, if it was only the vampire, we could expect excuses: maybe she was reincarnated, maybe she looked like an old lost love, maybe an ancient vampire just knew this kinda stuff.
But a plain old human? love? TWO DAYS?
Alright, maybe the English are just very casual about the word. Alright doesn't mean much.
And then she proclaims "HE LOVES ME" to another vampire and goes on and on about his better qualities. Girl, you've lost me.
And later, when you see said vampire in action you go "Oh you think you know someone"
You DONT. that's the point. IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN A WEEK YET.
This entire book would have been perfect if those little words were erased. Everything could be the same. The Lust. The dating. The sense of loyalty. Just be vague with the L-bomb christ.
But, despite this, this book made me laugh twice before the 40% mark so it deserves its stars.
I really loved the vampire relationship dynamic. How this girl gets thrust into something uncomfortable and she has to learn how different their culture really is. And I am extremely disappointed that she didn't even blink that the BIG BAD vampire knows she is a necromancer. Like not even an "oh of course he knows"
no no, we just skipped that scene. #plothole which wouldn't have been a big deal if vampires hadn't proclaimed all necromancers dead on sight.
But seriously.
The L-bomb? she spends more time in the book with another guy than the actual vampire. What kind of crazy ass pheromones is running around here??

I really liked the beginning of this. It was an unique concept to me, with unique stats. The challenges were fun. But the moment the character arrives in "Hub Two" where the other people are, this book devolves into an YA cliché.
I had to force myself through the last few chapters.

There is just something about grave injustice that touches me, which means I cried twice in the first 40% of this book. And I loved the rest of the journey.
I loved the snarky AI, I loved the mysterious slime. I loved how there weren't any romance because these kids seriously were a little bit too occupied with more serious things.
I loved that both me and Spensa was wrong in our theories.
I loved how immature and naive Spensa was in the beginning, and that you could really tell that her experienced shaped her and made her grow.
