There are a lot of things I could say about this book that would all pretty much boil down to: JUST GO READ BECAUSE IT'S SO GOOD.
From the writing to the plot and characters, White does an excellent job of portraying the brutality of Vlad the Impaler as a woman without cheapening either the character or the historical figure, since Lada's ruthlessness is complimented and held in check by Radu's sweeter but much more calculating temperament.
I'm very glad I got to see Lada and Radu through their childhood because their characters would've been much harder to stomach had they just been introduced at 16 as ruthless/brutal and calculating, respectively.
I've dwelt quite a bit on the characters because And I Darken is chiefly character-driven, with large section of "inactivity" punctuated by bursts of action. This brings me to my one complaint about the book (well it depends on how you look at it). I was expecting a lot more action from it, instead this first book was setting things up, with the second one being (presumably) where the plot really takes off.
(If anything, this only serves to make me all the more excited for the second book).

Well JK Rowling may not be the author of My Immortal but Jack Thorne sure could be if The Cursed Child is anything to go by.
I've been a fan of the Jackaby series for years and having a preview of Ghostly Echoes was delightful! It was very interesting to see the different reactions Abigail and Jackaby have when it came to Jenny's case (especially where Jackaby is concerned) and the glimpse into the connected criminal case only served to make me anticipate the book's release even more.
An engaging story and fast paced plot, with characters that truly shine. Every step of this book was unpredictable and I look forward to more of Cordova's writing.
I picked this book up because of the hype surrounding it and I'm very glad for it. The characters were captivating, the world was fascinating, and the plot was well executed, if a bit hunger games-esque in several places. But I did have 2 glaring problems:
1. The romance. It felt unnecessary in all 3 cases, not to mention the fact that the love triangle felt shoehorned in.
2. The plot took entirely too long to take off, with a slow build up that lasted for the grand mojority of the book. The blurb made it seem like this would be a competition from the very beginning, when that only happened 90% into the book.
I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel, though, and I hope to see more of the three queens actually fighting for something (particularly Katherine, she's definitely my favourite so far).

I don't remember the last time I cried tears of joy, yet here I am.
