Salgado is perhaps THE master social documentary photographer, as well as a brilliant activist. Of his photography collections, this has become my favorite.
Short, inspirational, practical tidbits for the creative in all of us. There's a lot to revisit in this book.
Perhaps I thought this book wouldn't amount to much, but it's both deeper (in its sociology and psychology of learning) and more engaging (in equipping us ALL to think visually. Combined with the recent Sketchnote books by [a:Mike Rohde|4707285|Mike Rohde|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-ccc56e79bcc2db9e6cdcd450a4940d46.png] and [a:Austin Kleon|2985039|Austin Kleon|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1381372368p2/2985039.jpg], these three authors have unleashed a force of creativity within me that I just didn't know I had. I've reread Doodle Revolution this year and will continue to; just as I have with Rohde's and Kleon's books.
This is Danny Gregory's sketchbook/journal, begun after his wife's tragic accident that led to her paralysis and to the family's transformation. Though the story loses steam partway through (the raison d' etre fades and Gregory's place based sketches come to the forefront), the book works well as an invitation to journal visually, to process emotionally and to heal by any means necessary.
This is a thick, well researched bookshelf manual, especially helpful for the medical literature reviews of various migraine types.
The author's perspective is a bit old-school, though up to date. He's interested only in medical documentation (and not alternative medicine). His chapter intros are stories of a patient's interaction with an MD, and those stories are a bit forced. But it's a good reference, especially good at the literature reviews for the various flavors of migraine.
The Kindle version is poorly formatted with bad chapter and section markers that are easy to miss.

If you've encountered Danny Gregory's work before but haven't met him in this book yet, this is his pinnacle for me. If you haven't yet encountered Danny, start here.
Danny's visual journals - watercolor images and handwritten text - carry an emotional weight that mere words don't. And this book, written as he grieved the sudden death of his wife, will make you misty and show you a way forward in dark times.
Danny shows me how the combination of imagery and text can combine to be greater than the whole. His two surveys of this creative approach , using a variety of authors, [b:An Illustrated Life|8895439|An Illustrated Life|Danny Gregory|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348773982s/8895439.jpg|3288384] and [b:An Illustrated Journey: Inspiration from the Private Art Journals of Traveling Artists, Illustrators and Designers|17989456|An Illustrated Journey Inspiration from the Private Art Journals of Traveling Artists, Illustrators and Designers|Danny Gregory|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1369820447s/17989456.jpg|21622382], are well done and broad summaries.
This book in particular is powerfully emotive.

This is a clear, helpful introduction to half uncial lettering, knotwork and zoomorphs. It is the best I've yet read, and had me practicing new skills in no time. Quick to read and review, but a good survey to the early Celtic decorated arts.
As happy as I am to see the popularity of silence and solitude for contemporary busyness, this book is like the author's TED talk: not particularly deep or engaging, long on memoir and short on application for the reader. Many better books on the subject exist, though if this book introduces solitude to the masses who go on to read more deeply and broadly, it will have been a good stepping stone.
