I’m not even a hardcore animal person and this book made me all sorts of emotional. It’s a story that just sticks with you.

Excellent book to share with elementary aged children. We did this as a read aloud. There were quite a few details I hadn’t remembered from school.

It’s a quick read that holds even my most fidgety child’s attention.

This is a great book to follow, Hiroshima.

I won’t lie though, as a mama, I struggled to read this. My heart just kept breaking over and over again.

Another quick read, but I’d recommend it to anyone.

We enjoyed this so much! The kids were really intrigued and couldn’t wait to read this each night. Even our 5 yr old retained some facts about Galileo.

The Who Was books are fantastic reads. Hate the cover art, but the content is fascinating and captivating. I always walk away with having learned something myself too!

Allen Say is a favorite author of mine, and my children’s. We have been immersing ourselves in Japanese culture and readings all year and Say has been a huge part of it all.

I highly recommend all of his books, but this one might be my favorite. As we began, I was prepared for a more melancholy turn of events. However, this book is filled with a familiar nostalgic feeling (regardless if you’re Japanese or not) that brings forth a lot of joy at the end.

My kiddos stayed alert through the story and my older ones (9 & 8) were really glued to the story.

Artwork is stunning. Which I would expect nothing less from an Allen Say book.

Read it. It’s a beautiful story that should be shared as a family.

This book made me teary! I adore Allen Say’s books. Such simple stories, but they stick with you.

This is a story about an American little girl who grows up wanting to leave for Japan. After high school, she does just that. However, arriving in the super city of Tokyo bursts her dreams of the quiet, quaint Japan she though she’d live.

My daughter is 9 and also dreams of living in Japan. This touched my mama heart is a beautiful way. This may have taken the place as favorites when it comes to Say’s work.

Great introduction to a great man. Love the photos too.
