Another one I read at my 8 year old son’s request, and this is such a sweet little fantasy novel. High enough stakes to keep it emotionally compelling but also simple enough for kids to actively engage with. Also, Pixit is adorable. I think all parents would wish for a Pixit for their child.

I’m reading the series aloud to Max and I have to admit I was nervous to reach this one because it’s where things start to get very serious and dark but he handled it quite maturely. Also his first 700+ page book!

I saw this book advertised on a Instagram book club ad, and admittedly did not realize it was YA. Once I adjusted to the notion it was for younger readers I really fell into the creative story and setting. Also glad to see in the acknowledgements that the author was inspired by Gaiman’s Stardust because that was in my head the whole time!

Reading this whole series aloud to Max (to take a breather from Harry Potter). Still always magical and I love the irreverent witticisms in Lewis’s writing, but every time I return of these I remember and deeply sigh over some of the frigid black and white morality and casual old school sexism. Stopping for lots of between chapter chats with Max.
