5 Star ranking from my 6 year old son. He’s obsessed with these books. I’ll admit they aren’t my favorite to read aloud but I do enjoy introducing this level of vocabulary to him.

This series is... I don’t know... ok. I really like the plot, the use of mythology, and the world building but I find the two main characters insufferable. She has approximately 15 “who am I and how do I use magic” epiphanies in this book, each one of them indistinguishable from the next, so the only reason I knew the final one would be the epiphany that stuck is because there was only about 12 pages left. Also, the romance seems like a good partnership in the last two books but I still can’t accept how rapey he was in the first book so I’ve continued to dislike him throughout. It was a fun recap of Greek mythology and the games in the second book totally deserve their own series, but otherwise most of this is a hard pass.

The premise of this book is so incredibly good, and the first 3/4 is excellent, but the conclusion sort of Hi out for me. I wanted the creepy parts to be creepier and the revaluations to be more.. revealing? I liked this very short novel but Im left a little unsatisfied.

These are fun, flawed, relatable young women. It’s a great read!

This premise is ridiculous and fun: time stops when they orgasm. A couple meets and discovers they share this talent, and proceeds to rob banks after having sex in the bank bathrooms. In the first few issues I felt like the art was a little confusing as every female character had a variation of dark long hair with bangs, but I eventually got it sorted. The writing style is irreverent and witty. The character issues go deeper than the crazy set up. This is not (even a little) for kids or preteens. Lots of porno conversation that’s amazing and hilarious.

Can Fiona Staples just illustrate everything forever? Beautiful art, always. Only complaint is that often her characters look the same across books. Like several of these faces reminded me of faces from Saga.

This has a very spy movie, man/woman of mystery air about it which is super fun. I didn’t love it as much as I expected to, but certainly still enjoyed myself.

This book is very loosely set during the Scottish war for independence, featuring a dragon shifting warrior who - I shit you not - reconnects with his first crush, a lady dragon shifter, because she’s now a pirate captain and he needs a ship and a crew. They set sail to discover treasure buried by - wait for it - the Knights Templar and find themselves shipwrecked on a possessed island. So there’s the set up. To be fair, for a book with that set up it’s better than one might think. At least well structured and evenly paced. The female lead wasn’t cringey and the guy wasn’t an asshole, which is refreshing in the world of absurd fantasy romance novels. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So many iterations of this sorry (graphic novel, film, etc..) and I so, so, so enjoyed this audiobook. The author interview at the end of this edition was also thoughtful and lovely to listen to.

Rainbow Rowell for the win! 🌈 The Runaways can be tricky to write in an effective, emotional way (as we saw with Whedon’s “meh” take on the group - and he’s otherwise one of my all time favs). Not to be outdone, Kris Anka’s art is spot on, beautiful, creative, and perfect for the Runaways. I love this emotional, teenage, tragic story and these deeply flawed but intensely honest characters. Lots of old themes revived here: first they physically ran away. This picks up after most of them emotionally ran away and are ignoring their current reality. Running away never really works. Friends help.
