A dark, gruesome, and gross tale of a daughter manipulated by her mother. It got a little too dark at times with the emotional abuse the mother inflicted on the daughter. But I’m at least glad that there was a happy ending and everything ended decently. My favorite character was Hester, who was also a narrator of the book, and I liked her parts much better than Cordelia’s. I felt I could connect better to Hester and found her witty and headstrong, something that I always like to see in books.

I was expecting this to be spookier. After reading The Sun Down Motel, I had high hopes that St. James’ books would be equally spooky. But this one was disappointing. About 2/3 of the way through there is one heart pounding scene, but otherwise this is just a typical murder mystery with a ghostly twist.

An anthology of 9 separate stories that all have similar themes of family, love, and finding one’s place in the world. It was a great collection of stories that will stick with me for a long time.
A lot of depressing themes that I really don’t want to read about. Both characters had more things to complain about than not, and hardly anything about books. I was reading for the books; not the dead best friend, sick mom, past bullying, or both characters complaining about how terrible their parents are.
