I think 3 stars is pretty generous at this point … This story had so much potential but fell so short in my opinion. The overall concept of the book is so cool. Six people with aptitudes in different types of magic are chosen to compete for five spots in a secret society.
One would expect to read a lot about the magic each person possesses and how they would use it to secure their spots. You’d expect to read about them forming alliances and trying to undermine each other. You’d expect an exciting story full of action and magic.
What you get are a lot of long winded and convoluted conversations that don’t always make sense and don’t add to the overall plot of the book. Honestly, I didn’t know what exactly was supposed to be going on for like 90% of the book. The last 50 pages or so were the best and only relevant part of the book.
I really wanted to like this book … but I hate reading books where I have to google words the author uses because they wanted it to seem smarter than it needed to be. I consider myself to be pretty intelligent and I kept having to reread and go back and check that I was understanding things correctly because I felt that the sentences didn’t always make sense. And what was with all the random sidebars in the book. Two characters would be having a conversation and one of them would have a two page interlude about something totally unrelated before going back to the original conversation.
Just poorly written and poorly executed in my opinion … it could have been so good and it just wasn’t.
