I really wanted to love this - the main characters are just a bit older than me, and I should have been able to visualise everything so well as I lived through these years as a student and then working in London too. But it just didn't resonate. And I didn't find the characters likeable at all. Can't think of one I liked. A shame - I had high hopes.

4.5 stars. I really loved this book, but I suspect most of the reason I loved it is that (a) I love watching cycling (track and road) and (b) I'm British and got totally and utterly caught up in the 2012 London Olympics. If it had been a book about, say, football (soccer) and a football world cup I probably would have found it just ok. Just some thoughts in case anyone is thinking of reading it based on my love :)

I enjoy Julia Quinn's books but I'm not sure why I liked this one so much - it just particularly appealed to me :)

I loved this book. Set in 1946, it's a series of letters mostly to and from Juliet, an author who stumbles upon the story of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. As the members of the society write back and forth, she gets to hear tales of occupied Guernsey during WWII and we get to hear the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Funny, sad, poignant and happy, it is absolutely beautifully done and a tale to treasure.
