3.5/5
I'm aware that my rating is probably too high and that even a 3/5 would be generous, but I had too much fun reading this to give it a negative rating even if it's easily the weakest of the series thus far. I know that something a lot of people don't like about this book is Rachel getting amnesia, which I do think is a stupid storyline but I actually quite like the conclusion of it, especially with Cassie's observation of how much getting amnesia scared Rachel because it was a threat that came from within herself, something which is obviously incredibly important to Rachel's character going forward. Tobias does deserve better, though.

A year after staring this book and I have finally finished it!! It taking me so goddamn long to finish this doesn't speak to its quality at all because this is an absolutely incredible book. Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant might be the best writer and we should talk about that more. Georgia and Shaun's relationship was so lovely, they've become one of my favourite sibling duos. Also Georgia is aroace, Shaun is bi and you can pry those headcanons out of my cold, dead hands. The most incredible thing about this book, though, is the worldbuilding. There's so much exposition but it's all written in a voice that is distinctly Georgia's and it never feels infodumpy. I honestly don't know if I'm going to continue the series because I'm pretty sure I saw that it follows different characters in the same world but who knows.
edit: uhhh yeah I will definitely not be reading the rest of this series. a) I was wrong, it does follow shaun but apparently he's a real bad POV character, but the main reason is b) so apparently shaun and georgia were in a relationship. i've lowered it to a 4.5 because that fact has ruined this book a little for me. mira grant, why would you do this to me. i'm going to pretend this is a standalone.

“I had thought that I was the sculptor and she was the golem. But now I considered that she might be the sculptor, the maestro, the creatrix, expanding and improving me, giving life to my dead parts, laughter to my breath. Maybe she was remaking me in her image. Maybe we were remaking each other.”
This book is not going to be for everyone but I fucking loved it. BIG trigger warnings for disordered eating, body dysmorphia, fatphobia, purging, starving, calorie counting, etc. Basically everything that's associated with eating disorders is depicted here and is depicted in extreme detail.
