I feel so sad about this book. Tight writing, great storytelling, and complex characters...as long as those characters are men. I enjoyed the read, and then thought about it for a minute and got mad. Basic premise: boy is adrift, mom is sad and sends him away, he gets saved by manic pixie dream girl. Now they're dating. I really wanted to love this book, with it being own voices and everything. Sigh.

More of a middle school drama story than a fantasy story, but once i got over it being an unexpected genre it's well written and the characters are very believable children, not little adults, which I appreciate. Lots of great representation for bipoc kids.

Our heroine moves to a new city and finds a shop that sells happy memories. Except...maybe people need more than happiness to feel fulfilled? I could see this sparking a lot of great SEL conversations.

Sweet story about learning how to stand up for oneself, using a great bully tactic. Silly nonsense words! I'll put this in the hands of anyone asking me for anti-bullying books as well as general self-confidence.

The writing is a bit stilted, and I don't love the main character. Just didn't grip me enough to continue.

Very fun adventure with a satisfying ending. Plus I love the idea of genies having heralds, which are a whole separate sub-class of genie-like beings.

An emotional look at the experience of war from the viewpoint of a child. Gentle, in that it entails no blood and death is only alluded to, not experienced or seen.

A fun read-aloud, but more of a lap-sit book than a storytime book, due to how much is going on in the illustrations.

I love learning about cultures not my own, especially from authors who are part of those cultures. This Yoruba princess is a terrific story of a hopeful future for the Yoruba people.
