You know when a book starts off slow but you stick with it because you think it's going to pick up and have a really great ending? This was not one of them. The ending was so convoluted and inane that I want to hunt down the author and slap some sense into him. This book is compared to The Alienist, a book I thoroughly loved and frankly, the comparison is an insult to Caleb Carr.
I really enjoyed this book, it's a a good old fashioned mystery and suspense fozy without a murder and I felt the plot had a good pace to it. More importantly (to me, anyway) was how much I enjoyed the author's writing style. The characters were realistic and the main character, Sophie, was likeable from the first page. The romance was written well, it didn't get cloying as many do (I'm not big on romance novels) and I liked that the paranormal part of it felt natural (I've read other books where it seems like most of the story is the main character trying to come to grips with seeing ghosts or whatnot. I hate that.) I can't wait to read more from this author, I'll definitely put her on my watch-for list.
Read this a few years ago and enjoyed it, a well crafted mystery and a familiar setting for me.
This was a good text to refresh my rudimentary knowledge of Norwegian. I would say that this may be adequate to introduce someone to the language as a self-study text, but it would only teach a little vocab and reading comprehension. With the CDs for listening comprehension and/or someone you can practice speaking Norwegian, it would be a good introduction to the Norwegian language.
