mousereads's Reviews (2.14k)

I thought this was an incredibly cute continuation of our journey with Vincent. I really appreciated the recap and felt it was short and sweet but informative enough that if you hadn't read the other books, you could have gotten away with just this one.

There were some panels that had too much text that didn't feel relevant to the story, which didn't necessarily take away from it, but simply was a distraction. All in all though, I enjoyed this and enjoyed watching Vincent try and learn how to fall in love!

Atlantis was a really interesting take on a common story. Instead of focusing solely on the discovery of the underwater world, we got a focus on both sides. The writing was very descriptive, and because both of the groups were seeing each other for the first time, we got well-explained descriptors for everyone's appearance. The underwater world and the way their homes worked was unique, as well as cars and technology. I found the science behind these stories really interesting and realistic as well. However, the pacing for this was not as exciting as I would have expected. I think from a middle-grade standpoint, this book could be used in science classes to explain a lot of different things: from audio technology to radio waves, how evolution works, and oceanic creatures. The ending also left us with a bit of a cliffhanger, and I will admit that I am extremely interested to find out what it means!

This book was a 3.5 read until the very end...and that dropped it half a star. The twins themselves felt very typical "opposites" but you could tell they very much loved each other in this book. I would have preferred equal conflict resolution with both Aurora and Arden, but it wasn't too frustrating regardless. The concept of this book and the history told to you was absolutely beautiful. The Jamaican history woven throughout was really solid to read.

However, this book felt like a lot of talk, and not a lot of action. There was a lot of telling you the story and telling you about their powers, but when it came to the final battle? Not too much action really seemed to feel written.

Overall, the concept and storytelling carried this story quite a bit more than the characters and I think this book would be a really solid fit for early YA readers!

Here is where my beef starts and the spoilers.

WHAT THE FUCK WAS UP WITH THE ROMANCE IN THE BEGINNING AND THE END? AND ZION YEAH OK HE WAS A VICTIM OF BRAINWASHING AND ABUSE BUT SUDDENLY HE'S JUST FINE AND BETTER? NAH. I GOT BEEF WITH BOTH THOSE PLOT POINTS. They just sat weird with me okay, that's all.

Unfortunately, I am DNF'ing this at 50%. The information feels less than accessible from a reading point of view and is tedious to read. Additionally, there is a hyper-focus on one singular form of mother wound it feels- one that I personally have not experienced. This book is probably great for people whose mother's defaulted them to being their best friend and emotional sponge- however, there was not much for me to relate to in this. With that as well as the tediousness of the writing, I had to DNF. I may come back to this at a later time.

Also- this is nitpicky- I don't even know which book I'm supposed to be reviewing on Goodreads for this as there are several different ones with the same cover and a different cover.

This book was not for me. The characters all spoke like caricatures of thriller characters- as if someone was just kidding the whole time. The story wasn't interesting, and, I felt like I had figure it out by 25% in. I went ahead and checked the ending and...I did. I was really hoping for a fun weekend read, and this just missed the mark.
