Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Perfect Family is a bit of a slow burn, with increasingly more dangerous pranks being pulled on the Adler family. However, the pranks take a backseat to each character’s inane ability to make everything about themselves and their secrets. The secrets make you wait for them to get worse, more interesting, worth the kind of events that occurring – and spoiler, they aren’t worth it. While the secrets were boring, and the characters frustrating, I stuck it out to the end with this one.

I stuck it out with the Perfect Family in the hopes that the twist would make it all worth it. It wasn’t. People may enjoy this for the slow tension, and I can understand that, but the ending was ridiculous, and the characters frustrating. Harding crafted a story that had opportunities to be great but failed to make use of those opportunities.

“Two girls and a wolf standing down the darkness.”

This story genuinely took me by surprise with its fast-paced and emotionally crafted plotline. Most survivalist-based stories take their time to drive things to slow desperation, but this book was desperate from the start. The stakes felt high, and Long managed to prevent that from getting old. The relationship between Sena and Iska the wolf made me feel so much more than I expected. The world was written in such a fantastic way, I felt like I could taste the snow while I was reading (on a very hot Texas summer day!).

I am so excited to get a final copy of this when it releases in 2022. The found-family aspects had me crying. The world and its horrors, both human-made and not, had me on the edge of my seat. Not only is Sena a fantastic character to read, but our side characters were also lush and full of life to read. This was hands down one of the best books I’ve read this year.

2.5 stars, rounded up.

Star Eater is listed as an adult book, however, aside from sex being a part of the more horror aspects, this reads like a young adult fantasy. I enjoy young adult, so I didn’t dislike this, but I imagine other readers will.

My primary issue with the book was that it’s a solid 400 pages, and a 15 hour audiobook- but I had no idea what was going on until 50% in. Because of the way things made no sense to me, the vital twist fell flat. How can I appreciate a magical twist, if I don’t really understand the influence of the magical system to begin with?

As I received an audiobook ARC- I want to say that the narrator did not do a fantastic job of differentiating between who was talking. With a plot that no one explains the pieces of, and characters you can’t tell the difference between, this was a headache to follow.

This was a book I so desperately wanted to like, but it fell through for me. Maybe it’s better on paper, but based on other reviews- it looks like that’s wishful thinking. Everything felt shallow and not fully developed, as if we didn’t quite understand the world even as it was being written.

This would get another star if it was like, 25% shorter honestly
