I didn’t expect this book to be better than the first (as the first was so good), but it was. There is amazing representation, a believable love store, weaved seamlessly into a story about war, and politics, and magic. She’s done it again. I cannot wait to read the final book in the trilogy and I expect my heart to be ripped to pieces.

This book was interesting, and the writing style of the points of view makes it difficult for me to review it. The style of this book is best described as chaotic. The pieces still feel disjointed, and most of my questions were not answered. The representation is fantastic, and the overarching plot intriguing. But the execution has left me feeling like I didn’t read anything at all.

The body horror and gore in this book were well written, and fun to read (if you’re into that kind of thing). As individual stories, this book was incredibly interesting. If you like speculative horror, and urban fantasy with modern monsters, this book would be the one for you. I just wish the ending was a bit more satisfying.

This book is difficult to review in full because it was beautiful, but also it was quite long. What I appreciated about this book was that, although it is a part of a set, it was a full story. It’s nuanced, with many different themes. The character growth in this is interesting, as our female main characters are relatively morally grey. Malini and Priya start their companionship as one of necessity for both. They are transparent about their missions and goals with one another, and these goals align.
Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot. There are a lot of layers and a lot of pieces at play. This could be overwhelming for some who are expecting a fast-paced fantasy. I am very excited to read the next books in this trilogy!
