2.5, rounded up.
“The more I learn, the less I feel like I understand what the hell is happening.”
This quote explains how I felt about this book as a whole. It’s hard to pinpoint my feelings in this review because the pacing was fast, and I finished it to know what was happening. But- I still don’t know what was happening. Perhaps it was just me and my struggle with the writing style, or perhaps it was the plot itself. It wasn’t that I disliked the book – it was that I didn’t care. The writing style was somewhat jarring. Other reviews seem to praise the style of the prose, however, I struggled with it. There were many times I had no idea who was talking, or who was being referred to. The plot summary that we are given also doesn’t explain much at all about the story. This plot summary is, in fact, not at all what the book is about.

I left with more questions than answers, and that’s not my favorite thing.

This book is described as lyrical, however, it often borders on verse. The repetitive nature of this writing felt mind-numbing, at times, and frustrating at others. The twist of this book is one of the more interesting things that happens- and even our characters seem undeterred by it. This was strange, considering the entire plot relies on this twist. The world-building was fantastic, and I would have enjoyed an actual thriller written in prose in this world. However, this felt more like a contemporary in verse dressed up as a thriller labeled lyrical.

There could have been so much more to this story. The writing style took those opportunities away.

I enjoyed this short novella. It has all the elements of a larger story, and the epilogue was satisfying. I feel novella’s often leave something to be desired, and Khaw managed to avoid this. The plot of it was, at times, a bit confusing and all over the place. However, this is forgivable when logic gets thrown out the window in most ghost stories. The characters are already at one another’s throats from page one. This allowed for the tension to be set without a long build up.
If you’re looking for a quick, gory horror story- this is the novella for you. The imagery is dreamlike and dark. Our characters are perfectly unlikable, and our ghost is wonderfully terrifying. The ending to this was a bit confusing, but the epilogue cleared a lot up and wrapped things nicely for me.

This was a fast-paced, creepy book that I enjoyed quite a lot.

The thing with this book that harms it, for me, was the insta-love. The worst part of that is that Magnus and Andromeda have amazing chemistry. Their romance just felt like it happened all the sudden after some witty banter. The physical chemistry is almost non-existence, and it felt like it came completely out of the blue. The romance issue alone affected the reading for me. This took a star away, despite how much I wanted to love the book. If insta-love is your thing, you may really and truly enjoy this.

There is a healthy level of resolution to this tale, that left me feeling satisfied and pleased. This really was a fantastic book, and I am very glad I got to read it.
