A brilliant survey of the inextricable links between the rise of capitalism and the development of slavery, as well as resistance by slaves themselves to their situation.
A very interesting and well-written play. Beautiful characterisation. Harrowing scenes. Very gay. Could have gotten more into the working class fight for the vote, but even mentioning it is pretty good for a work to do with the suffrage movement.
The first Wilde that I’ve read, and it was excellent. The translation from Wilde’s original French was also brilliant, with a wonderful poetry and rhythm to the words.
I'm really glad I've revisited this 15 years after studying it in the HSC. Reading it for pleasure rather than for an exam has really let me reevaluate and enjoy it!
This book is entertaining, easy to read, and infinitely educational.
