“I regret to inform you that sometime in the next 24 hours you’ll be meeting an untimely death. And while there isn’t anything we can do to suspend that, you still have a chance to live.”

Between midnight and 3 am, Death-Cast calls those who will die within the next 24 hours. To help them live their last day to the fullest, an app called Last Friend was created to help connect they dying with those around them. Because of this app, Rufus and Mateo connect at 3 am with the hopes of squeezing in all the life they had yet to live.

Before we get too much farther, I didn’t cry. I wanted a book that would smash my heart to smithereens, but maybe the hype behind the book got in the way for me? Definitely an amazing read and well-deserving of 5 stars. I loved seeing Rufus and Mateo grow into who they wanted to be. It makes me wonder what I’ll look back on my own life one day and think, especially if that day isn’t as far away as I’d like. Would future me be proud of how I lived today, or would I wish I did more and greater things?

Above all, this book was a heart-wrenching and beautiful reminder to, in the words of the Death-Cast callers, “live this day to the fullest.”

We’re giving this one 3.5 stars, because I have lots of mixed feelings...

I’ve been waiting for a few months to finally be able to read this book after hearing so many good and hopeful things about it. I didn’t know how to feel about a Peter Pan re-telling, especially one that was supposed to be darker. This story still felt cozy, but wasn’t quite all that I had hoped for.

This book built of the Disney Peter Pan in a way that felt like it gave him a bit more depth, but there wasn’t a whole ton of character development from that point (Heads up, we’re going to get into some spoilers soon). From the moment Wendy found him to when he left her in her old bedroom at the end, he was just kind of bland. Wendy was set up well at the beginning, but also never changed or grew. She kept wanting to find her brothers and playing with her little acorn.
