After more than a month of promising myself I’d finish it eventually, I have officially dnf-ed this book at about 31%.
I think the saddest thing is that I LOVED the first one, Red Queen was great. It got you invested into the world and the characters, and lord, I don’t even know what happened with this one. Maybe it had just been too long since I’d read Red Queen (like, October), or maybe it was just bad. I found myself not able to stand the main character, Mare, and even less so able to stand the other characters or her relationship with Cal. Everything just seemed so bland in comparison with the first, but who knows. Maybe I’ll end up looking up a synopsis of this one and giving the third a shot.
P.S. this book is a turd on my bookshelf

I have so many complicated feelings about this book, because I really enjoyed it when I first read it, but as I let it sit with me more I realized that I really just felt very neutrally about it. I definitely think that it's not for everyone, and the way TJR formatted it was a little odd- If not very unique!
A big reason I love this book so much, though, is because it's something my mom and I can connect over. I will happily read any terrible mom book if it makes her happy (We also watched the show together, which was marvelous, this book translated very well to the screen).
So, I really enjoyed it, and it has the added bonus of being sentimental to my mom and I. Wah wah I'm a mama's girl

I need to reread this but my annotations were HIDEOUS and I absolutely do not want to have to look at them
I’ll start with what might be my favorite quote ever:
“Why raise children on the promise of magic? Why create a want in them that can never be satisfied—for revelation, for transformation—and then set them adrift in a bleak, pragmatic world?” Page 219
I cannot even find the words to describe how this quote makes me feel. It’s the knowledge that you were raised on all these fairytales, of giant castles and fairy godmothers, only for that wonder to be easily stripped from you. For that quiet hope that there is something magical, and that kind of thing is what we see happen in Darlington!! We see his wonder and amazement at magic being almost completely stripped from him after his experience in hell. Also, “Daniel in the lion’s den”?? Making Darlington the prince on their second use of the gauntlet—and then his demon, his torturer, being a demon prince? Leigh Bardugo you are an absolute genius.
ALSO DARLINGTON DEMOM GUARD DOG?? CRAZY.
Update 1/26/23
I hope I don’t wake up until the next one is released.
Update 12/8/23
There were several chapters that dragged (every single flashback) and for that, I removed .25, but like at its core (in my heart) it's a five-star book

I genuinely have no words
This book was absolutely marvelous, of course I adored the first, but seeing the characters relationships build was just magnificent. Also, Bluesey?? The whole Camaro under the stars??? Sobbed.
I didn’t like Ronan like at all in the first book, but now I can safely say I tolerate him! 20/10

I Need Like 5-7 business days before I can articulate a review. That was incredible.

I was serious about that 5-7 business days.
I don’t even have the words to describe what an absolutely marvelous end this was to an absolutely magnificent series. I’ve recommended this series to everyone I know. This is my favorite series ever not only for the magic and yearning I feel for that, but for the relationships both good and bad between the characters. All of the characters have so much depth, everything is so tied together, it’s just all so perfect. I could go on forever and ever, please, if you have not yet, read this series.
4/5/23
Back again to say that I will never be the same again after reading these books. They changed me as a person.
