mysterious tense

This was my first Lee Child novel and unfortunately it's a flop. I think Child is able to plot out an entertaining thriller, but his writng leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not a fan of his short or weirdly formulated sentences where each new part starts with 'and'. Has he not heard of the comma? I also really dislike how he often begins sentences with conjunctions instead of continuing the previous sentence. It's just such an odd choice. I would give it some slack if it was a character quirk, but every single character sounds exactly the same in this book.

I also strongly dislike Reacher's character. That guy's a prick and not even in an amusing way, but in an obnoxious way.

Unfortunately I have another Reacher novel on my shelf, this one written with Andrew Child, so maybe there's a sliver of hope that it will be better.
dark tense

This was my first book by the author and I really liked it. I thought it was well-paced and the story gripped me from the very start. It did leave some threads open at the end, but it's normal with such series, so it doesn't bother me too much, especially because I can more or less guess how they're going to be resolved. There were a few misleading techniques whose explanation I felt was a tad too convenient (such as
Eleanor/Gillian stealing the photos because she thought Della was a cute baby
), but not eye-rollingly so.

I don't usually complete crime series and just pick and choose what interests me, but I might make an exception for this one.

I'm just not feeling it. I like the setting, but the language used does not reflect the time of the story, which makes me feel disconnected from it.
emotional hopeful reflective sad slow-paced

This is a beautiful book and a really nice translation. Had to pick up my jaw off the floor a couple of times. The pace was a little too slow for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the setting. Made me want to get a job as a cemetery keeper, even if I'm terrified of the dead.
emotional sad

Severely disappointed in this book. I was tired of the overplayed message by the first 10%. After that, it just started to feel like an incredibly patronising lecture. I wasn't a fan of the MCs, but Mateo annoyed me especially with his frequent judgement of how people live their lives, simply because he's jealous.

I was really bothered by the author not explaining anything about the Death-Cast, and while I get that this wasn't the point of the book (the point, apparently, was telling people at gunpoint to carpe diem), you're not even going to tell me what a Decker is and why they're called that, really? And then there were all these damn apps. There was an app for everything in this book. So while I'm being told to live every day like it's my last, the characters are switching between apps like little ipad kids.

I was also confused as to why Rufus and Mateo had to end the day 'in love'. It was rushed and simply not believable whatsoever. But my pettiest complaint is perhaps the fact that while they were 'travelling', the author named countries and in one case even a city, but Africa is just Africa, as if it's not a huge-ass continent. It's just as dumb as when people say they visited Europe. Do better.
adventurous
