It's not the best poetry I've ever read, but it's not the worst either!

This is a great introduction to a wide variety of Libyan writing (though more women would have been good, as always). I was a bit cynical about the vokume as Chorin is American and I wondered if that woukd give the book a particular slant, or whether he' d be sensitive to the past. That said, it appeared to me that this book was born very much out of a love for Libya and an exasperation that its literature was so inaccessible to English speakers. I like that kind of attitude. I'd love to hear what Libyan people think of it though!

I thought this was a lovely book and introduce me to Oman - a place i knew very little about. Desperate to try Omani jelly sweets now. Its a complex book and the multiple perspectives might mot be for everyone, but i really liked it. Especially gaining insight into many women's lives. Would vrry much recommend. It was so close to 5 for me but i got confused by the ending.

Who knew there was so much to know about one specific variety of barley? About one third of the book is a history of the grain and the rest are recipes. The recioes are written in an informal style which makes them very readable.

This is a fantastic book about patriarchy and its origins, written by a Muslim, Arab woman. Anyone interested in the liberation of women should give it a read.
