What this book did well it did very well. The perspective of a black woman in publishing and the microagressions she faces is very real. I think Nella is a compelling main character, she is struggling to pursue her dreams while also balance her black identity in a white dominated space. However, the plot dragged, and there seemed to be too much going on. The underground resistance didn't seem to do much for the plot, and the psychological twist at the end felt forced. I think there wasn't enough lead up to it honestly, and there were too many side characters to keep straight that didn't actually provide much to the plot.
challenging informative medium-paced

An infuriating book at it's core, I couldn't help but be half enraged the entire time I listened to it. It does a fantastic job in outlining the ways eugenics and white supremacist rhetorics have shaped the cultural views of fatness in the US, UK, and France specifically. We have truly not changed as a species and men have always had far too much to say about women's bodies and their "role in furthering the XYZ race". Fantastic work with this book.

An interesting little read with wonderful art and a neat premise. However, I think it lost me a bit once it became about lovers and spiritual ties. I don’t think I quite felt that longing or emotion. But still a visually entertaining book.

The book handles generational trauma and sexuality very honestly. Rachel was hard to like at first but then becomes a very vulnerable character that you can’t help but root for in a way.
