I think I like this book more than Ng's Little Fires Everywhere, even though I read it first. This story really kept me engaged and emotional the whole way through. Fantastically written and completely engrossing. I highly recommend.
This was a short story that made me tear up a bit and left me with just enough hope to start sobbing in my bed in the middle of the night. So thank you for that.
I was genuinely surprised by how much I loved this book, since it's something out of my usual interests. I read it on recommendation from JennaLitPicks on TikTok and I'm so happy I picked it up! The characters were all lovable, and ironically enough the romance made my aromantic ass feel SEEN for once, so I was very emotional the whole time.
I think I'm in agreement with most other reviewers of this book. The art was beautiful, and the underlying message is one that is very heartfelt. But the actual text in the book was difficult to read due to the coloring and the font, and I felt like it ended too quickly. It seemed like there's a final chapter missing.
Compared to Solomon's The Deep, I didn't enjoy this one as much. I think the character are compelling, and the setting is very interesting, but the story really dragged in several places. It felt like there was way to much focus on things that didn't actually matter to the plot, only to have the plot come back full force with no reason for me to care about it. Also, some of the romantic subplots just, didn't do it for me.
I feel like in some ways this is a more enjoyable Tell-Tale Heart. An enjoyable read overall, with a nice dash of dark humor to the whole piece. I liked the open ending as well.
This isn't my favorite of the American short stories, mostly because I think it's a bit overrated compared to some of the other selections available.
I enjoyed this story less than I remember upon my most recent read, but it's still one of the funnier American short stories to me. Something about Puritan's digging their own graves with their guilt really just does it for me.
The first part of the story was really enjoyable and fun. I wasn't as interested in the second part, and was a bit confused at first when it started. But overall I think it was a fun read, and wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be given the age.
