This one went way in depth on Umbridge, Quirrel, Slughorn and Peeves, as well as details on Potions, Cauldrons and other things.
– The Umbridge chapter made me hate her even more. How anyone ever could have been mean to our queen, JKR is beyond me, and the fact that Umbridge is a lumped up version of all their horrible qualities just makes me want to punch her even more then I already did.
– Slughorn is cool. But like dude. Why you gotta be playing favorites all the time? But actually his back story really helped to fill in the gaps about why he was on the run when Dumbledore and Harry found him in the 6th book. His guilt is also much more heavily detailed and why he was so keen to avoid revealing his original memory/conversation with Tom Riddle.
– Peeves is annoying. Nothing really new with him except a bit of his history at Hogwarts, though I genuinely wish she had mentioned why he was left out of the movies. I felt like he was a big role in the books and skipping him in the movies always bothered me.
– Quirrel, okay. So he was the big change for me. I hated him. I always thought that he was this horrible, dark wizard who allowed himself to be given to Voldemort as an act of dedication. He was really just this awkward dude who wanted to be able to stand up for himself and thought Voldemort could teach him that, in addition to him claiming fame in finding the disembodied, former dark lord. It sucks that he was taken over and basically made a slave of Voldemort, but obviously he can’t have thought that he would have been able to resist him either. But he did think that for some ridiculous reason and he got himself a slow and awful death. Sucks to be him, but at least now I kind of pity how he got into that situation to begin with.

– So the Hufflepuff Common Room sounds absolutely amazing and adorable and cozy and I want my house to look just like it. Also, dancing and waving cacti?! All I pictured was Groot and I smiled instantly. HOW CUTE IS THAT?!
– I absolutely love the concept of how Platform 9 and 3/4 came to exist and that other in between platforms also exist to take you to other Wizarding locations. It definitely clarifies as well, knowing that there are a few Ministry employees dressed as muggles at the start and end of term to handle any nosey muggles that are curious about the hoards of people disappearing. Though if that was the case, where were they in Harry’s second year when Dobby blocked the barrier?
– I also felt like there could have been a LOT more detail regarding where the Marauders gained the ability to create such a ridiculously advanced piece of magic that is the Marauders’ Map. On the other hand I was also let down regarding how they figured out how to become Animagi at the age of…what, in their 3rd or 4th year? Crazyyyy.

So the Time Turners. Now I’m thrown off. If you’ve read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child you understand what I'm talking about.

I cannot believe that I haven't read this before it was required for my Intro to Young Adult Literature course this semester. I was blown away by the writing style and the plot was wonderful. This story was nothing like I was expecting and was so impressed by it I dove right into the last two so quickly. I'm eager to finish the trilogy and find out more!

I want to like this more than I did. I just didn't though. So many of the references and clues went over my head. Lyra and Will's relationship was fantastic and I adored the plot and writing style but the overall theme was lost on me. All the biblical hints and clues and references meant nothing to me or I had to stop reading to look into what they meant and in turn, lost the groove I was in. I just didn't love it though I wish I did!

Oh, my god. This entire book was just completely unexpected and I was so blown away by every aspect of this story.

The writing style was perfect. It flowed, included plenty of detail and left me wanting to keep reading. I haven't had a book suck me in like this in a very long time and I was so thrilled to have a story entice me to keep turning pages to the very end.

This book held me captive from beginning to end and I don't get this enough anymore. I'm so over the moon with how this book turned out and am incredibly happy with the selection made by Once Upon a Book Club.

Sherman Alexi’s writing creates an experience for the reader, even one who has never and will never experience anything remotely like Juniors’ story, and allows us to understand what it is like to be a Native American on a reservation.

The truths that Alexi speaks without ever preaching or reciting are simply breath-taking and at times, bring tears. I was overwhelmed reading this incredible book and I simply can’t express enough how much I loved it. I think this should absolutely be required reading for everyone, as it helps kids who may not fit in, but also teaches them to be a bit kinder to those who may not fit in right away. More than that however, it has so many lessons for adults woven into the heart-wrenching moments and sarcastic humor.

This phenomenal story is one for the favorites shelf. I’m so glad I was forced to read it, because this will be one that will never sit on my shelf collecting dust again.

I'm not big into graphic novels but I thought this was a wonderful rendition of what social anxiety looks like, especially for those who don't necessarily understand how it affects people.

Seeing the cover of this book, I was immediately concerned that something was going to happen to the dog, and let’s be honest – pets facing any sort of tragedy in a book is incredibly difficult to read. That said, I trust Michelle’s judgement, so in I went and tried the Once Upon a Book Club Box's March selection!

Oh my goodness – this book was PHENOMENAL. This tackled SO many issues from 1950s America, I don’t even know where to begin. First of all, the dog? He is the connection between these four strangers. He isn’t even what the book is all about but he brings them all together and he deserves a place on the front cover for doing that.
