I did not think this book was going to end the way it did! I was hoping for a bigger climax of the story's ending. However, I was appreciative that this book didn't break me like most books when the topics of slavery arise. However, I recommend this book to understand freedom and what people would do to remain free or attain freedom.
In many ways, I thought this book was a self-help book. The way she described her anger, wants, needs in a such an unbridled way gave me some courage. I think everyone can use some extra courage. I couldn't help but think, "there are a lot of good people in the world." This was primarily due to the people she met on her journey. Cheryl is a brilliant writer and I love every second of this book. To think I was never going to read this! Gosh, what was I thinking! If you lost someone, hit rock bottom, or feel like it is the end of the world and you want to see how other people survive the lost of a loved one PLEASE read this book!
I loved how the author described love, grief, and forgiveness. I teared up during the messages about how precious life is, how to cherish love and to care for others. The only thing I didn't like is how much the author focused on heteronormative narratives. Constantly referring to "real boy" or "strong man." The female characters seemed like that they were so lost if they didn't have a "man" around. But overall if you want to read a book of how to TAKE nothing for granted. This is your book!
There is so many factors that goes into outliers that we just don’t think of. There is are just great moments in times and throughout generations that it is advantageous to be unfortunate. Those opportunities won’t be present in other times through history. Read the book to figure out what I’m saying.
This is a good start for me to start thinking about recipes to make while in abroad but a lot of the ingredients are not available to me here.
I read the first book of this series years ago; 2011 to be exact. I thought that I really enjoyed the book. However, in the first couple of chapters, I thought to myself "why am I reading this?" I forgot why I originally enjoyed the book. Somehow I forgot that the series addresses some of the many messed up systems that prevent humans from caring for the earth and natural beauty. This book points out the flaws in our societal systems: such as western beauty standards, death of the environment, the groups we put ourselves in, elitism, privileged people choosing to remain privilege because it's easier, people struggling to stay WOKE, love, sacrifice, and systems (including people) who are dedicated to keeping us divided.
Needless to say, I am ready for the next book!

An amazing book! This book has made it to my top favorite books of all times! I felt myself in most of characters. This book reminds me that it’s not my job to hold the hands of the Haleys’ of the world. Educate yourself and do better! I also was saddened by our unspoken and often time spoken words of defeat when it comes to not receiving justice for the black bodies in the streets by trigger happy police officers. No justice no peace! BLM👊🏼👊🏾👊🏽👊🏿
