This book wasn’t my favorite of the series. That’s all I have to say on that. Check out that live videos of myself and co-host Nicole from @whopickedthisbook discuss the book.

The Duke and I

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

I did not finish the book because the story was much different than the TV show and less diverse.

The grandmother blessing to the tribe was the most uplifting and beautiful thing to read. I wish more communities honored and took care of their elders in this way.

Morgan Jenkins journey of finding her roots was expiring. As a Black American of slave ancestry, I am often left with no answers to the many questions about my ancestors. I was beautiful to watch Jenkins take charge and find out all that she can about her relatives who are no longer on the earthly plane. I am my family's historian and has been incredibly important to me to trace by my family and relatives. I've been doing it for over 12 years. This book gave me so much hope. I wish I had the coins to travel to where my ancestors traveled.

I’ve decided to rate this book a 3.75. Any rating below that would be unfair to all of the complexities and intersectional traumas that were mentioned throughout the book. In an age where the resurgent of the awful legacy of boarding schools is prevalent. This is a reminder of what that legacy looks like. This is a book that reminds the reader of the effects of not having a tie to place and space. To constantly to be afraid in your body, to constantly be reminded of what’s it like to be brown and a survivor of assault.

The main character Nora tried her best to find her path in life. Often leading to her making unhealthy decisions. However, she wasn’t always like that. Her past and her family system created an environment that lead to a few instances of self distraction. I found myself intrigued and drawn to her. Her persistence in finding truth and being a truth seeker was frustrating and admirable. I wish I got more about her past while reading. But since this is a series I am thinking the next books will give us more to think about.
