This was my first book by Brandon Massey and I throughly enjoyed this book. Massey has a way of fading to black and setting up a scene that fills you with the emotion that he is intending for you to feel. This story follows a young man who move to a town that is quiet different. I am writing different because I don’t want to spoil too much of the book.
David was raised by his mother and did not know his father. Due to this disconnect, David moves from this small town to Dark corner in order to better understand his father. His father is well known and is also well known in this town. David finds out that his family has more secrets than he cared to know. David falls in love with this woman name Nia who has a past that is haunting her. Through trails and tribulations David goes on this quest on helping this town while also helping himself.

The anger that I feel for Valerie is beyond this world. I just can’t believe how harsh she was because she was forced to marry someone that she didn’t love. She refuses to let people be happy and live their lives. She used her beauty and her stature to manipulate her. The trouble she put Nina through made me want to throw the book across the room so many times.
Valerie had an entire HUSBAND and checking on Hector?? Make it make sense. The math ain’t mathing. You (Valerie) dismissed him (Hector) sis! You said you didn’t want him. He kept telling you “Valerie, I want that old thang back.” However, you said nope! Then when he was officially over you, you sabotage his love to Nina? You didn’t want him fall in love with Nina so much that you thought if you three him a cake that he would change his mind?? Sis! I can’t….
And Luke! Don’t get me started on Luke. Luke was Valerie’s puppet that was so blinded by his arrogance, greed, and trash behavior.
The wayyyyyy Valerie husband packed her bags sent me! Yasss! I don’t always believe in divorce but if the shoe fits. Yass! Then he told her to pray about it!! Ma’ammm the shade. I was here for it. Here for it all!
Wow Silva, you never disappoint to get me into the emotions of the characters and having me wanting to fight AT LEAST one of the male characters.
The way Nina was treated was so heartbreaking. I just really wanted her to turn evil a little bit and get her revenge. She was too sweet for this world. I am glad my thoughts of Hector changed because he almost got these literary hands as well. Also, why couldn’t Hector marry who he wanted? He may have not had a name as a “beautiful one” but he had coins??? The decorum of this time never cease to amaze me. Which is why I always turn to one of my favorite genres, Historical Fiction. I live for the drama in Historical fiction novels.

What an hard and eye opening story of the determination of two fathers who were once bigots and homophobic. This story follows their journeys of being allies for their sons. The only problem is that they showed up for their sons after the death of their sons. I don't want to say too much because there would be some spoilers. I will say this is my favorite S.A Cosby novel to date.
I just really love a book when characters go on a journey of discovery.

I truly enjoyed this story. This is a story of a family journey to America and secrets the family possesses. I found myself intrigued with Orquidea Divina and her gifts. Her silence and her dedication to her family was unmatched. This is also a story about how men can trick women into thinking they are one thing that they are not.

Seriously this is probably one of the best comic series that I have ever read. It is set during the Harlem renaissance. The images and graphics is very much giving me Jazz and historical relevance. These comics are about a family that is trying their best to get rid of the evils in the world. While also dealing with multigenerational trauma. They are dealing with white folks who view them as less than themselves (human beings). These comics are more than a work of art and telling of conjure women and root work and how Black women has been on the forefront and the backbones of Black communities. I was loving every bit of it, even the hard parts.
This comic series also asked the question, “what happens to Black folks when the pain is too much and consume you?”
The best parts of these comics were the articles in the back that provides a more theoretical explanation for why things were explored a certain way in these comics. Their was close attention paid to the work of Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, Charles Chestnut, and W.E.B Dubois.

Ya know. It’s been a good comic book month for me. These comics are no exception. I like the graphics. There are blood splatter in the comics for those of you with sensitive stomachs. These comics follows the story of a young boy who is telling a horror story. Only to find out him and his friends are living in the horror story.
As the town turns against him. A new person enters the town by the name Slaughter. She is a mysterious person and he wants to ask her for help or help him figure out what monsters are targeting children.
I loved the story line and the dedication to uncovering the truth.
