Without a question my second favorite book of the year! Second to Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. What a powerful testament to a person’s life. I loved this more than I can possible put in words. You need to audiobook this book because the way she read this book left no crumbs. I felt like I needed to pay more for that experience.

I loved SMG but this book wasn’t the best story that I’ve read for her. The characters did not feel as dynamic as the other books. I get soooo frustrated when parents who are pushy. I understand that it’s normal in Latine and Black communities (my own) but when I read it, I get annoyed. I say all this to say, I like the amount of space the “pushy” parents appeared in this book. I usually see it too immersed into the story and then I get annoyed. Well done for that. I do think this is a story of you should never underestimate the underdog. I also wanted to fight the MC ex boyfriend Manuel! Just a piece of work for sure.

I didn’t feel connected to story and I found myself wanting the story to get to the point. The pace was too slow for me.
