I loved the writing style. I loved her word choice, they were complicated and eloquent. I expanded my vocabulary while reading this book for sure!
In the short:
But, I had no or little love of the characters. The plot felt like it was trying to be a dark, exotic version of a Cassandra Clare book with an unsuccessful addition of Romeo and Juliet. The first half was just had me gone with the relationships and secrecy and romance. I was over it. Then Laini Taylor dropped most of the characters including the only felt I felt a little bit for, completely alienating me from the book.
In the long:
In specifics, the "we used to date" between Kaz and Karou was unnecessary and created eye-rolling, not needed tension. The book could have survived without it. Then the angel was introduced, creating the Romeo and Juliet and failed Cassandra Clare feels. As a fan of the play and the Shadowhunter World, I was not impressed. During this part we weren't given much magic, just a girl trying to normal despite her subnormal upbringing. She had friends wither personality who were some of the charms to the story. It wasn't bad. Then everything I had just read about (except the love interest of course) was thrown out the window as we entered the Elsewhere and the magical side of the world with wars and humanoids and all the cool fantasy/action/politics you could wish for. After that I didn't care for anyone. Everything past that point was confusing and frustrating. It was what I was hoping for going in, but I had gotten comfortable in our world and was not pleased being abruptly taken away from it.
I'm not turned off of Laini Taylor though, I just not a Daughter of Shadow and Bone fan. Okay so I read this on a whim and it was much better than I was expecting. It was full of action and adventure. It reminded me of the very old Archie comics I used to find in antique shops and book sales because of the way it was styled and told. Wonder Woman's adventure reminded me very much of the T.V. show with Linda Carter and it was cool to see the connection between the show, the comic, and the block-buster film. I like dhow the Amazons were a bit more tech-savvy. It was a lot more believable.
