I absolutely devoured this book. As a gal who came of age in the American apparel era this story captivated me. I had little idea of the scandal around the company, but had absolutely no idea how cult like and damaging it was. Down to the charismatic leader controlling the minds of several young girls and taking everything at his disposal for granted.
This story is gripping, deeply upsetting and unsettling in nature. Kates humor and honestly really drives this memoir home. Throughout her entire experience with this company she navigated her way through a feminist lens. She was a young woman fresh out of college starting her working career and had no idea the dangers lurking around her. As allegations rise against the “leader” of American apparel she starts to see the demise of it all. Asking her to defy her morals for a career she doesn’t even know if she wants anymore.
I highly recommend this memoir to anyone who is even remotely interested in cults/cult mentality. To people who have fixations with nostalgia and the 2000s with their fashion and references. To feminists readers everywhere please pick this one up when it becomes available to you july 17th.
Thank you to netgalley and Macmillan Audio and thank you to Kate for her fantastic narration and storytelling. I will be thinking of this story and recommending it to anyone who will listen.

man I am so conflicted with this book because YES Kuang is a beautiful ethereal earth angel who can do no wrong, but I do have some issues with this one.
June never learns anything despite everything life throws at her for being a part of the racism and inequality that runs rampant in the publish industry, but that’s also the issue I have with it. I know it’s the reality of the situation if these events ever were to happen and I’m sure in some less dramatic ways it has happened! White woman are gonna white woman she says as much in the text! but it’s the lack of accountability that is really giving me some type of feeling, maybe because I read to escape into worlds that make me forget the garbage hellscape we live in now and the ending of this book just validate the garage hellscape we live in. And in a way that is a smart way to write because she knows it’s the truth. but it just felt lacking in a way?
But Kuang know that I love you and I will follow you into the dark!!!!!

I did it!!! I found the perfect romance book!!!
I don’t see anything wrong with Amy
talking at night is a beautiful character study of rosie and will’s will they won’t they relationship over the span of many years. the impact they have over each others choices and life paths. a shared trauma holds them together in a way no one else can really understand.
it’s about two people trying to figure out who they are with or without each other. missed adventures and opportunities, addiction and illness what would the other think of this? would they judge or would they help?
the studies of will and rosie are so deeply vulnerable and open in a way that sometimes hurt while reading. I felt like I lived a full life beside this book, like I too grew with them and witnessed the same tragedy they did.

My sister in law molly introduced me to Kate Kennedy a few years ago. She’s become a bonding touchstone for us with her relatable millennial ways. So naturally we both freaked when she announced her book. And then I freaked again when I got an eARC of said book.
As someone who lets annual rewatches of gilmore girls and the church of Taylor swift rule their life as well, I knew this would be the book for me. This book was a miserable and magical look back (in the daybed if you will) it dug deep into the darkest corners of my lil brain and remembered all the best and worst parts of the 90s/00s experience. It isn’t a book everyone is going to love and understand and I think Kate does a great job of being transparent about that in her writing. She has pigeonholed the pop culture girly of the early aughts who has some serious religious trauma she is still unpacking into adulthood. Kate has a very special way of making niche people and occasions feel seen I love the heart and soul she puts into her writing. I think this book, much like the Barbie movie, was made for women to take up space and shout their interests loud and proud leaning into their girlhood parts they never fully outgrew. A lot of the now chapter does seem like a long form pod ep with the ranting and the rambling, but isn’t that why we love her? I thank her for sharing what she does with us, we aren’t owed any of it but I’m happy she exists to share.
Thank you St. Martin’s press, netgalley and of course Kate Kennedy for allowing me to read this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
