I was surprised to find that this wasn't a real band, the story was so well written I believed it was true. I had doubts about the writing style at first since a lot of other reviews didn't like it, but I actually didn't mind the whole thing being in interview style. I found the first half of the book was really fast paced, but the second half slowed down and I was less interested. Still finished the whole thing ina day though.
I wouldn't say this was like either Harry Potter or Narnia, unless it was Harry Potter condensed into 200 pages and someone had only read an excerpt of Narnia. I didn't find any of the characters that remarkable and I didn't love most choices at the ending.
My mom recommended this, I finished it in a single day and it was both depressing and really good.
Very similar to The Alice Network by Kate Quinn, and apparently based off of the same woman. It was a quick read, felt very powerful and honest.
I really enjoyed this. It was simple and entertaining, and had a bit of Gail Carriger humor. I didn't realize it was a series but I look forward to reading the next books.
I expected this book to plod along like Jane Eyre, but I was pleasantly surprised. The Narrator was a bit weak and vapid to start with but really grows as the plot gets more interesting, and I was surprised by a few turns. I also really liked the synopsis at the end.
I really wanted to like this, but it just didn't grab me. I loved the beginning where he talked about the importance of literature and libraries and reading to children, but after that it was just introductions to books and authors I didn't know.
I didn't enjoy this quite as much as I did American Gods, but it was still delightful and exciting. It was not written as a sequel, but there are a few overlapping characters and ideas. I would really like to continue reading more.
I read this for the "A Fairy Tale" part of my 2019 reading challenge. This might not have been the strongest of the Five Hundred Kingdoms books, but I thought it was a great comfort read. It was simple, enjoyable, and a little predictable.
I read this for the "A Title That Starts With The Letter 'J'" part of my 2019 reading challenge. This series has always been one of my favorites.
