I have been wanting to read this book for a while, since I first saw its cover on the Allen County Public Library Mock Newbery blog. I'm surprised that it isn't on more Mock lists. It wasn't quite as good as I was expecting, although I can't put my finger on exactly what is missing. It probably is the best book I've read that's been published this year, however.

Cats with wings are trying to find a place to live. A nice quick read that I would guess works well as a read-aloud.

Wonderfully gory. I hope it finds a place on the MSBA list next year. I think kids will really enjoy it. The structure of the book with the narrator's commentary every so often works really well.

I think I might like this better than (book: The Ninth Ward). I can't put my finger on exactly what it was. However, unlike last year, I would be totally happy if either of these books won the Newbery.

This is obviously the most awesome review I have written.

While I enjoyed learning about J.M. Barrie's life, I wish there had been an author's note at the end filling in some of the holes in the book's narrative. For example, there is a line about how Barrie's marriage was falling apart, but nothing else mentioned about it. I know it's a children's book, but I thought that was a bit sloppy. Otherwise, I liked it.

I would give this 2.5 stars, but there's no way of doing that.

If you hadn't told me this book was by Patricia MacLachlan, I probably could have guessed by the style. I did like the book, and the message. However, I do not think many (if any) fourth graders write like that in the beginning. Secondly, while I understand why the book is so short, for me, it was too short to really delve into the characters. I was especially disappointed with not knowing more about Henry. Why does he need to be the adult? What does that mean? Why does he worry about holding everything together?

I don't know. It was a quick read, and I did enjoy it, but I'm not sure I would recommend it as a best book of 2010, which Amazon.com did.

I liked it. Not as good as Percy, better than the Red Pyramid.

I'm not sure this would have been my pick, but I haven't read any of the other titles on the list. I'm not sure I have anything to add to the other reviews that have been published and are quite good. I'll let you read those and make up your mind.

This book is about sidewalk chalk that magically comes to life. It is pretty awesome. It also has no words.
