I enjoyed it, although not quite as much as the Luxe books. This one takes place in the 1920s, 1929 to be precise, and follows a new group of characters: Cordelia, searching New York for the dad she never knew, Letty, her best friend who wants to be a star, and Astrid, a socialite who seems bored quite often and will soon befriend Cordelia. With this series and HBO's new series Boardwalk Empire, I wonder if we are seeing the start of the flapper style coming back. We'll see.

Anderson continues her story of two black children during the Revolutionary War, this time from the point of view of Curzon. It is winter, and the army is on the move to Valley Forge. Isabel is gone. The camp seems to have little by way of supplies. Can Curzon find Isabel, or, more importantly, can he survive the winter?

I don't think you have to read the first book in the series to understand this one, but it would give you some background information.

MSBA Nominee 2010-2011

This book is definitely for the older end of the MSBA audience. Kyra is part of a polygamous cult and at age 14, is "chosen" to be the seventh wife of her uncle. This disgusts her and her family. Her family, however, seems paralyzed to do anything to change it. Should Kyra stay, because this might be just punishment for her transgressions, or should she go?

MSBA Nominee 2010-2011

Aubrey's father and sister died in a car crash. She and her mother survive. One day, her mother just leaves her. Can Aubrey survive on her own? With help from her grandmother and friends, will she eventually start to heal?

I found this book to be very powerful. It should be required reading for everyone, or at the very least, for politicians and diplomats. I don't see how we get away with turning our faces from sex trafficking, "honor" killings and female genital mutilation. This book is an eye-opener.

Ends on a cliff-hanger. I need to get the next book ASAP! :)

1986 Newbery Winner

I read it because I never had. It was okay.
