Age: Preschool-Kidnergarten
Family: Older brother, younger sister
Emotions: Anger, frustration
Older siblings will commiserate with this young boy who gets so angry at his sister that he loses his gravity. The silliness in the book will make kids laugh and the authentic situation will allow them to empathize. A good book to discuss anger.

A troll and a little girl don't fit into their surroundings. They decide to swap places, believing they will be much happier if they can fit in with their peers and parents. But life's dull, boring, and unkempt when they are like everyone else and their friends and family feel the same way. Their experiment allowed the troll and girl to realize that they like being different and they return to their original life. No swap-backsies does not apply here.

Cote presents two friends that express their emotions in two very different ways. Hopefully, a child will be able to see themselves in either character. After the book, readers and listeners can discuss how we may respond differently to a variety of situations but we are experiencing the same things.

Age: Infant-Preschool (also good for early readers)
Family: Grandpa and granddaughter
Grandpa and his little girl bond together over a cup of tea, making each other laugh and sharing stories. This book also provides something new to the grandparents books--video chat for family that lives far away.
Brief, rhyming sentences paired with simple pictures will make this an excellent share for storytime.

Family: New baby, older brother
Blackall portrays a child's confusion about the age-old question: Where do babies come from? The art work is detailed and gorgeous. I was particularly fond of the various ethnicities and personalities presented throughout the book. While a child will be able to relate to this burning question, Blackall also shows parents that the best answer is the most honest answer. She even provides example answers and vocabulary in a Q&A page at the back.

Concept Skill: Perspective size
Cole provides a perfect visual representation of sizes and how something can seem big until it is placed next to something small. He then works the size comparison in reverse, allowing the brain to see it from two different sequences.

Animals: Mouse
Things that go: first airplanes
Excellent narrative and nail-biting suspense paired with vastly detailed illustrations allow Lindbergh the mouse to soar.

Wallace has an excellent rhythm to his text that blends fiction (talking animals, anthropomorphism) and nonfiction (scientific terminology, animal life). I was quite impressed by the unusual rhymes and the prominent use of nonfiction. The illustrations are eye-catching, bold, and anatomically correct. The supplemental material helps the reader and listener to separate fact from fiction but also provides some gray areas. This accessible and relevant information will be much appreciated by teachers.

Art: Painting
Although there were a few stumbled meter problems, Roth reaches out to all those early quitters. Nothing spectacular but it gets the job done.

Art: Drawing
A little girl comes across a long black line (that looks like the floor). She picks it up and twirls it around, creating different things to entertain her. Soon, though, the line begins to turn against her and becomes a great big monster ready to gobble her up--until a cute, fierce bear saves her. The end paper reveals that the line has been drawn by a boy this whole time.
Short, simple, and open to interpretation. I'd love to hear a child tell this story.
