From supper to bath time to pajamas, a little girl's actions mirror the wild behavior of a variety of animals. She eats corn like a beaver, jumps like a kangaroo, and splashes like a dolphin. While pretending to be these animals, Millie simultaneously denies her namesake to avoid responsibility.
Parents will smirk and nod along to Millie's innocent antics. The ending provides a common parental tactic to get our little wildlings under control. The potential for multiple readings make this good for a bedtime book.

The text rhymes perfectly in every way. This would be a delight to read aloud to a family storytime.

Neurological Disorder: Highly Sensitive, anxiety, possibly OCD
Lots of relatable issues for tweens, especially managing friendship groups and maintaining one's identity in the process. Pham and Hale manage to provide accessible metaphors for such intangible things, giving kids a palatable way to understand such stressful situations. The interlaced fantasy story is a nice bridge for kids that are strictly into realistic fiction or fantasy. Hale also provides further discussion about anxiety, recognizing its potential roots, and demonstrating that children can be affected by it.

LGBTQ: First lesbian romance, bisexual or exploring protagonist
Tough Issue: Divorce
First line: "The Camp Rockaway brochure promised every kid was a rock star waiting to happen, but they never met me."
I truly adored this book! Melly is an extremely likeable, authentic character. As humans do, she had some flaws and made some bad choices but she seemed to always rectify them in ways that were honest and true to her personality and needs, which made for an extremely satisfying read. The friendship drama is relatable and captivating without being sickly. The romance organically builds and is a perfect introduction to queer romance for a younger audience, as both a window and a mirror.
As far as personal tastes go, this would be an excellent read for music enthusiasts and emerging band geeks since there are relatable experiences that discuss band practice, exploring new genres, and the passion behind excelling at your instrument of choice (for Melly, it's drums).
A delightful summer camp read!

Nothing special about this one but you better believe I'll be recommending it to any fans of Raina Telgemeier or Sunny Side Up.
Side note, Willow was written to be a clingy, desperate, whiny villain which felt super weird considering she's the main character's best friend.

Community Helper: Convenience store/small grocery store
Identity, characters: Dominican American
Identity, author: Asian American
Vibrant comic-style illustrations depict the every day life of a family-owned Bodega, from open to close to a late night dinner. Through the voice of a confident, friendly cat, Chip tells readers all about what his Bodega sells, its customers, and his family. Although the story bounces around a lot between the different facets of the Bodega, Chin uses time, from morning until night, to add a structure to the story.
A delightful glimpse into the inner-workings of a small grocery store and the people who work there.

Animals: Shark
Sports: Surfing
In this nearly wordless book, a lot of emotion is captured in that infamous word: DUDE. Best friends Platypus and Beaver take to the dangerous side of the beach to catch some gnarly waves. But when a shark emerges nearby, Platypus and Beaver shriek in fright, causing poor Shark to cry. So begins another friendship. Simple but fun.

"It's you I like. It's not the clothes you wear..." Ogilvy moves to town and encounters some rather unnecessary rules regarding clothing choices that dictate the activities you participate in. Wanting to do whatever they want in their favorite clothes, Ogilvy advocates for their choices in the end, encouraging others to do the same.
An excellent book that helps push back against gendered clothing. Simple and light-hearted.

Words of discouragement from the world at large won't stop these girls from doing what makes them happy. Inspiring and empowering. On the last page, meet each girl that posed throughout the book with a 2-sentence biography. Crisp photography of early elementary girls will be extremely appealing to my 3-year-old.

Nature: Environmental appreciation and protection
Action-filled rhyming couplets celebrate all that nature has to offer us through the year. While multicultural families joyfully interact with the natural world, Fliess periodically encourages us to do our part and "help the Earth to thrive and grow." An excellent addition to units on kindness.
