Drum Roll, Please
by Lisa Jenn Bigelow
Age: 4th-7th grade
LGBTQ: First lesbian romance, bisexual or exploring protagonist
Tough Issue: Divorce
First line: "The Camp Rockaway brochure promised every kid was a rock star waiting to happen, but they never met me."
I truly adored this book! Melly is an extremely likeable, authentic character. As humans do, she had some flaws and made some bad choices but she seemed to always rectify them in ways that were honest and true to her personality and needs, which made for an extremely satisfying read. The friendship drama is relatable and captivating without being sickly. The romance organically builds and is a perfect introduction to queer romance for a younger audience, as both a window and a mirror.
As far as personal tastes go, this would be an excellent read for music enthusiasts and emerging band geeks since there are relatable experiences that discuss band practice, exploring new genres, and the passion behind excelling at your instrument of choice (for Melly, it's drums).
A delightful summer camp read!
