Writing your own story
Four adult animals and a child bunny appear on an empty spread. They know they're in a book--but where's the story? The adults decide to wait around for the story to appear while, unbeknownst to the adults, the child decides to create the story itself.
A great way to encourage seizing the moment and the beauty of creative imagination.

Everything written in this book is wrong. Everything the reader says will be wrong. Adults must read this with absolute certainty and resolve. Do this and the kids will love trying to correct you. Groans of disdain will cry forth until the very end. A great book for children to laugh through their annoyance.

STEM: Math, addition
A toddler is popped in the bath after a painting mess where they practice "counting-on" addition with dogs, duckies, and bubbles. The lively, bright illustrations depict a delightful bath for the little one but this concept is just too early to introduce to the majority of toddlers. This would have made a great picture book for preschoolers but may be passed due to its "baby" board book format.

Animal: Crow
Family: Granddaughter & grandpa
Location: Tennessee, farm land
Music: Wind instruments, vocals
Fantastic acrylic paintings illustrate Lorraine and Pa Paw's music-filled life. Then a mysterious thief starts to filch random shiny objects until he steels their most beloved possessions: Pa Paw's harmonica and Lorraine's penny whistle. As a tempest rages outside and fear grips Lorraine, Pa Paw let's her know that "A tempest could tear this whole homeplace apart, but it can't touch the music that's deep in your heart!" Even without their instruments, they begin to fill the house with their singing.
The story is enchanting, the character's love for each other is heart-warming, and the illustrations are perfect for a classroom or a snuggly lapsit. The mystery and somewhat murky ending will lead to fun follow-up questions at the end for the grade school kids.

Animals: Rabbit, variety of others
Emotion: The roller coaster accompanied with seeing a creation destroyed, understanding and expressing strong emotions
Taylor is so proud of his block tower and is utterly defeated when it all comes crashing down. Several animals come to "help" but Taylor finds no comfort in talking, shouting, remembering, laughing, hiding, throwing it all away, or ruining someone else's creation. After being left alone, a cuddly little quiet bunny hops in and stays to listen to Taylor--which is just what he needs.
The way that Doerrfeld parallels the animal behavior with Taylor's actual thoughts is refreshingly original. A great addition to storytimes and lessons on kindness and being a friend.

What does the Grand Canyon say about the world's history? Chin uses the rock layers of this miraculous land formation to reveal the different time periods that occurred on this specific plot of land. Side notes and illustrations make this perfect for the information hungry but accessible enough for a basic overview of our national treasure.
As my own side note, I wish there was a bit more about how the rocks were carved out by the river, but that probably would have made for a very long picture book.

Multicultural: California, Latina
As a devout artist, Mira has color inside her room and a heart filled with joy. Walking around her gray city, Mira spreads her bright artwork to neighbors and community members until she meets a miralist who inspires her to paint the walls of the city she lives in. Soon, everyone is joining in the fun and working together to brighten up their community. Such beautiful artwork and I love that it is a story inspired by the artist's own work in San Diego.

Toys: Stuffed Animals
Amy loves her toys. "'Mine,' she said. 'My blankie. Mine.'" When the twin boys come in and take her toys, Amy is furious. She shouts and grabs them back. Soon Baby Joe cuddles with another toy and Amy also takes it back. But Baby Joe looks so sad and so alone that Amy decides to try a different way to play: "'Mine AND yours.'"
A fine storytime read-aloud with large pictures and 1-2 sentences per page. Heap encourages the practice of empathy and facial recognition since Amy is encouraged to look at sad Baby Joe.
