Unicorns don't exist--that's why that is a horse in a hat, clearly. The narrator uses logic to debunk the existence of unicorns, even though the illustrations depict magical things happening around these "horses." Finally, the hats are off and we can get a definitive answer!--but are those spikes from a building or a mountain or is it a horn?
A clever encouragement to believe in the unbelievable--a curious question at the end will be intriguing (or annoying) for children that INSIST on invalidating fantastical things.

Animal: Rabbit
Food: Apples
Another perfect addition to this bunny's adventures as his rumbling tummy goads him to pick some apples--but not without the listener's help. I was seconds from cutting off the red ribbon bookmark until I read the story and--gasp--it's a part of the interaction! The Bunny asks the audience to use his red scarf to create a ladder and, later, to build a bridge. Ingenious!

Animals: Gorillas
Food: Bananas, picky eater
Through rhyming verse, two adult gorillas try to get a picky eater to indulge in a variety of banana recipes. Nothing groundbreaking but satisfying in execution.

Character Identity: Cree
Author Identity: Cree-Ojibway
Thomas introduces simple Cree words through the friendly bus driver called Nimoshom. Slightly abstract, watercolor illustrations make this best for a lap read for children that adore school buses and their drivers

Fractured fairytales
Worth the eight year wait. Chicken comes home from school with a homework assignment: to read three books and find the Elephant of Surprise. No, says her papa, "she was talking about an element of surprise." Nice try, Papa. Within each fairytale that Papa reads, Chicken interrupts the story by finding a surprise elephant.
A delightful sequel that stays true to the "interrupting" premise.

Family: Mom, Dad, Daughter
A girl and her family go for a hike up a large hill in their town for the very first time. In true Rockwell fashion, realistic details are included such as the family's use of a trail map and the observation of flowers and animals. Another great addition to the ever-growing section about books that appeal to specific life experiences for children.

Sorry Portlandia fans, this one's strictly for music (or bio) fans, especially of Sleater Kinney, punk rock, and riot grrrl. The name dropping gets a little excessive but the disjointed organization is oddly satisfying--especially from such an avant garde artist.
Age: 4th-middle school
Identity: Biracial (black and white)
Music: Pianist
Tough Issue: Divorce, racism,
Every week, Isabella is shuttled between her mom and dad's house--leaving her feeling without a home of her own. As she is torn between these two relationships and these two worlds, she's also experiencing the after effects of a hate crime at her school against her best friend. Isabella tries to juggle her identity struggles throughout the book: am I white or black? Dad's Isabella or Mom's Izzy? But holding her together through these confusing times is her love for playing the piano and her anticipation of a major recital.
A LOT is happening in this book which left everything feeling a little underdeveloped--including the police shooting at the end. It was bold of Draper to have the most important event of the book get ruined by a police shooting--much like someone's life is ruined--or terminated--by such an event.
And if you didn't know slime was a thing, after the 10th mention in this book, you do now.
