Probably great and entirely useful for some, but I personally do not like motivational, self-help books and this one is full of inspirational quotes. I thought the humor would help me through it but it doesn't shine as strong as it does in Furiously Happy and Let's Pretend.

Beautiful.

Age: Preschool-Kindergarten
Animal: Pig

The Book Hog loves collecting books but, sadly, cannot read any of them. Visiting the library one day, he stumbles upon a storytime and discovers the beauty of the words inside the books, sparking his journey to learn to read.

The brevity of the story is perfect for storytime but the listeners might need other "learning to read" stories that provide more details about the challenges of learning to read.

Age: Preschool
Family: Mother and daughter
Location: Malaysia
Tough Issue: Ill mother (but does recover)

A devoted daughter loves her mommy time. When her mother takes to bed for an unidentified illness, Aleeya must find some way to make her feel better and to let her mommy know that she loves her. Aided by her daughter's love, mommy does indeed get better.

Lovely illustrations spotlight silly and tender moments between a mother and daughter. Listening children will feel reassurance that, like Aleeya, they can reciprocate their parent's reassuring and supportive love.

Age: Preschool-2nd grade

Mr. McMonkey is your game show host for the evening and you're the lucky participant! There will be five stunts and before each stunt you need to vote what will happen: Will it crash, splash, or moo?

The hilarious banana-obsessed monkey host, the call to participate, and the thrill of each stunt will quickly fit this book into the coveted "class favorite" spot.

Age: Preschool
Family: Grandpa and grandson
Toy: Kite

It's a blustery, fall day and a boy and his granddad scour the house in order to find a kite. As they're looking, they fondly recall past adventures. Clearly these two share a strong bond that is absolutely heart-filling--either the boy visits every weekend or the grandfather is raising him. Once the boy and granddad find the kite, they go to the park where their imaginations take them to flying in the sky until a threatening storm steers them for a landing back at their home.

1-3 sentences per oversized page make this a great read-aloud.

Age: Preschool-Kindergarten

An as-yet unnamed girl describes a variety of different things we can share: material things, games, food, kind words, knowledge, love, help, and creativity. The end provides a nice recap of the shared things so children can see the many different things we share beyond material gifts.

Lift-the-flaps may get some wear-and-tear in the library but the reinforced pages are a blessing.

Age: Preschool-1st grade

There are hard moments in our life that may leave us feeling lost; but, "know that I am here, as steady as a stone." A black and white hand clasp together as the author reassures us that love wins. The beginning has some heavy moments for a younger audience but the brevity of the story is a suitable read-aloud for all ages.

Age: Preschool
Emotions: Anger
Toy: Stuffed bunny

Claire is showing some great patience throughout the day as things don't go according to plan. First, a button pops off her bunny's clothes. Then, her favorite cereal is all gone. Then, there's a line at the swings. And finally, after waiting patiently in line, it begins to rain. Claire's anger has reached its tipping point and manifests in her bunny as it grows to 50 feet, smashing everything that has caused her stress. But Claire feels remorse when the swingset gets crushed underneath Fluffy's rage, and vows to make amends by fixing it.

Anger happens, especially after a series of unexpected situations. Claire isn't shamed for this emotional response but she does feel a responsibility to make things better.
