Age: Kindergarten - 2nd grade
Family: Mother
An exquisitely written piece of history for a younger age group about one woman's influence on a grandiose building. This book is just asking for further discussion on size and how important our small influence is in the grander scheme of things. Beyond the words, the format is larger than an average picture book, allowing it to be read aloud in a group.

Media: Watercolor
Illustration Style: Realistic, lots of white space for early listeners, some pictures are poorly chosen to correspond with the story
Miles makes his first trip to the barbershop with his dad who, with other customers of the shop, encourage Miles to be brave. When he finally gets to the chair, he becomes frightened by the sound of the razor but finds relief in his dad’s imagination. An excellent book for the first haircut and all the uncertainty that comes with it.

Age: Kindergarten to third grade
Media: Black pencil, acrylic
Illustration Style: Vast spaces on the ocean, Delicate pictures intermixed with large depictions of oceanic life using watercolor and collage
Tale of a boy and father fishing at sea, a tradition that was passed down from the boy's grandfather who sent his son away during the war. Although there is no great climax, there is finality when the boy and father return home and reflect on the impact of their fathers. This book will be great for family-run businesses because it promotes the pride and excitement for a child to participate in his parent's business.

Some superheroes are dads that use night vision instead of x-ray vision, wear camouflage instead of invisibility cloaks, and have platoons instead of sidekicks. Those dads may be gone for long periods of time but their cause is heroic. A quick read supported with clear, cool illustrations.

Ocean Life: Whales
Family: Father and child
Familiar Experience: Getting lost
Father whale and child anticipate and participate in whale migration through song. When the child whale goes to explore the dark deep, she (or he) get lost and remembers papa's words that if she listens hard enough, she will hear the call of her father's song and can find her way back to him.
This book can be used to discuss getting lost and not panicking. It can also be used to discuss colors because Marino provides rich depth in this world underneath the sea.

"If your dad will save you from pirates, gorilla pirates, robot gorilla pirates, and even robot gorilla pirates from Mars, you know he'll do anything for you." A boy's creative imagination puts him in the grips of dangerous villains while his "average" looking dad always outwits them in order to save his son. Even more precious, the little boy patches him up and kisses his bruises in the end. Excellent book for the heroic-minded dad.

"Mitchell was four years, one month, and five days old when he got his license. He may need a little boost getting into the driver’s seat, but once he’s behind the wheel, his car sure goes fast! Left turn, right turn, slow down for speed bumps - Mitchell is a pro. And he loves the way that horn sounds! There’s just one problem: Mitchell and his car have a slight disagreement about what type of fuel should go into the tank. . . . With warmth and sly wit, Hallie Durand follows a young child obsessed with all things automobile, while Tony Fucile’s comical illustrations convey the well-tuned bond between an obliging father and a high-octane child" (Goodreads feature review).
A fun pairing of regular driving terms and the hilarious illustrations of using your dad as a car.
