This book delighted and surprised me. Several times I thought I knew what it was about or where it was going, and then it would take a turn and head somewhere else entirely. Also it is #ownvoices af. The references are so specific to the author’s own life and communities that probably very few people would fully get all of them, but that is part of the whole experience of this novel in my opinion. Parts of it are even written in second person, with the protagonist(s) referred to as “you,” so it’s like there is an intimacy between writer and subject that doesn’t require explanations or translations, and we as the readers just get to be along for the ride. Like Junot Diaz, but without the footnotes, and more heart.
This book was not at all what I was expecting. More of a murder mystery that tried to be creepy than a haunting heart-pounding thriller. I wish it was more accurately described as I might have enjoyed it more if I wasn’t waiting for the thrill. Obviously it’s a classic for a reason: well written, atmospheric, foreboding, but it didn’t satisfy as I was hoping.
Phenomenally done. Mind-blowing word-building, fascinating characters. I would have loved to read a novel or series of several of the stories. And I would have loved the collection more if I loved short stories, but obviously that’s me, not Jemisin, whose mind is just *incomprehensible*. I just can’t imagine having a brain like that. The world-building alone...
My favorite stories were L’Alchimista, Valedictorian, On the Banks of the River Lex, and The Narcomancer.

Beautifully illustrated breezy little graphic novel perfect for my level of interest in Anne.
5 stars for the journey this book took me on. It’s not perfect, but damn does it provoke thought. I think the subtle Alice in Wonderland parallels were perfect because this book is definitely a rabbit hole experience. It seems like a lot of the negative reviews are around how the book seems to condone its contents/characters, but hello that’s not how novels work. This is a great example of art stirring the pot and prompting discussion. It’s also just really well done and I look forward to more from this debut author.
