This book is a little slow to get into but I'm not sure if that's because the first half is very religion heavy, and unfortunately that always brings me into a negative head space. But that is honestly just a personal thing and doesn't detract from how well the book is written.
The story picks up in the second half, and you really start to actually see more of who Reid is as a person, as most of the chapters written from his point of view, in the beginning, are very rigid and constricted, due to his mindset and beliefs. Lou, on the other hand, is a relateable vagabond that you can instantly connect with despite her contradicting rigidity and beliefs.
Overall I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the sequel.

Murder, betrayal, secrets, love - this has it all.
A fantastic sequel to Heart of Iron, I really wish that this had been a trilogy rather than a duology. I adored the characters and their journey but the ending was very swift, almost anti-climactic, as to why I feel it could have been made into three books. But I adored this world and it's characters so very much, certainly one of my favourite re-tellings to date.

A humorous and action packed story filled with greek mythology.
Having not read the Percy Jackson books, I felt that I might not enjoy this as much if there was too many references I didn't get, but I still found the story to be engaging.

I was given an early copy of this through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Secrets, betrayal, love and loss. This fantastic fantasy has it all.
The only negative I have to say is that Lyana, who this story is predominantly centred on (although it is told from multiple character perspectives from one chapter to the next) was probably the least interesting or relatable of the characters for me. She had a few strong moments where she had more depth to her, but she's a flighty (excuse the pun) character for me. Not as fleshed out and real as the others. Everyone has their flaws, battles to overcome, their internal monologues are deeper. She mostly felt shallow and entitled and I found it harder to root for her. I also wanted more of the trials to be covered, I felt that there could have been more given in that area to really structure the characters and their bonds.
However, having said all that, I love the plot of this story. I love the history, the differing beliefs. I like the twists and turns, the lows and highs. The diversity and representation through out the characters. And I very much am, already, eagerly awaiting the sequel!

What a fantastic conclusion to this duology! I would have loved to have seen this series continued even further, because I love the characters so much, but I am satisfied with it's ending.
Strong female characters triumph in this series, despite all the odds that are stacked against them. A real and gritty book that highlights the poison that is sexism in it's extreme's. Filled with love, in all it's forms. I truly enjoyed this duology so much.

As a self professed Scrooge, I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this retelling.
But I did thoroughly enjoy it, I'm still not a Christmas loving Merry person. It hasn't converted me. But I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of self discovery and growth. A fantastic story, even for all us Scrooge's out there.
