Ohhhh my hearttttttt!

well that was just so gosh darn cute!!

I do think it looked at the way fandom can turn toxic in a really interesting way - having conflicting perspectives was a unique way of exploring the impact and cause and effect of fan culture.

Although this book did tackle some strong topics, and really embraced a diverse, realistic cast, it held onto that easy ebb and flow of a YA contemporary. A quick, but enjoyable read - I think Oseman does a great job of balancing heavy topics with the lightness you want from a contemporary.

Shaun David Hutchinson is nothing if not a wordsmith. His writing is eloquent, smart, funny and touching. I love that diversity is not thrown in on the side, but it carefully woven into the narrative. His characters feel real and fleshed out - not always likable, don't always make the right choices, don't always say the right thing - but that is real and relatable.
As much as I really enjoyed this book, there were parts that did sit a little uneasy - the relationship between Freddy and Elena was tumultuous, and the way they treated/spoke to each other at times was concerning. But, as often is the case, not inaccurate for two teenagers.
