I am really tossing up between a 3.5/3.75 to a 4 on this one. I really enjoyed this book, and I am so, so glad it exists, because I think it is an excellent *start*.
A book that openly discussed feminism, labels and weighs everything attached to that word, is fantastic. A book that does that and is aimed at young adults - YAS! I hope this book kick starts a revolution and draws people into other feminist work... that is maybe a little more intersectional.
Don't get me wrong - intersectionality was 100% nodded at, and, I think, attempted - it just could have been done... better. There were a few microaggressions that could have been teased out, and a bit more depth could have been added to the inclusion of/discussions around those from outside the dominant discourse.
In saying that though, I think this book covered some great areas really well - power dynamics, systemic sexism and finding your voice - even when that is difficult. The family dynamics were fantastic, as were the female friendships. I especially liked Seths evolution and growth, I think that was teased out really well. I liked the balance of Viv being a typical teenage girl, crushing on a guy and some letting not-so-great-things slide and Viv finding her voice and addressing things that Seth did that were not ok with her. Because that is really fucking hard - not just for teenage girls. And I think it was handled really well.
I hope this becomes the gateway book for creating rad, empowered, feminist-as-fuck women with Moxie!
