Good books entertain, great books inspire growth - and, if you are lucky, you will find the golden ones that achieve both. Those like "Half of a Yellow Sun".
This book tells a complex story set against the Nigerian Civil War (Biafran War) in the 1960’s, following the lives of five unique characters, a house boy, a revolutionary professor, fierce twin sisters and an Englishman (the Nerd, the Princess, the Jock, the Basket Case, the Criminal…lol). We are moved fluidly back and forth through time, getting glimpses into pivotal moments in both history and the characters lives that allow for the story to unravel in the most beautiful, evocative manner. The way this has been done is nothing but pure artistry – you never wonder what point it is in time, despite crucial moments being completely skipped and then returned to at a later point, the story teased out in such a heartbreakingly exquisite way.
Despite having to fight my way through the beautiful density of the first 100-150 pages with that inane guilt of ‘not being instantly enraptured with an anticipated read’ (that only I am sure we have all felt at one stage), I was IN. I was so deeply into the narrative, so invested in the characters and the way the story unfolded that I found myself curled up dramatically, reading with one hand clasping my face. And yes, I am now the most melodramatic fool in the land.
