I still f*cking love AIDAN.

*2.5*
I found this repetitive and, to be honest, a little boring.

** trigger warnings for sexual assault, sexual shaming **

How is this a debut novel!? SO, SO good!
Bonfire is exactly what I like in this type of... I want to say, mystery?! It is a slow burning, 'show-not-tell' suspense that gives you enough tidbits to think you have it all figured out, but your only kinda right.
It does not read like a debut, it is sophisticated and well crafted, fast-paced and engrossing. There are a few things that could have been executed more effectively - mainly the wrap up/final chapter. I find I have the same issues with a lot of suspenseful books - the last bit tends to be wrapped up a little too conveniently, with a character narration of how loose ends got tied up. So to me, that is not a flaw in this book specifically, but the genre itself.

A YA book that speaks to women finding their voice and their strength? Exploring religion and family intrinsically, having a hajib-wearing Muslim girl telling a story that is not just about being hajib-wearing Muslim girl?! The exploration and narration of complicated familiar and friendship dynamics?! All while gathering insight into a culture to which I am not a part of?

I AM SO HERE FOR THIS!!!!!!

Although I can not speak to the authenticity of the Islamic / Muslim representation, I feel as though the YA genre needs more of this - more own-voices, authentic characters and stories, told in engaging and captivating ways.

Well, wasn't that just gosh-darn adorable!!
