Surprising no one, I’ve recently read another Gaiman book - and completely loved it. 

I’ve been sitting here, struggling to find a way to describe this book. Neverwhere is dark and gritty, but with a fairytale quality to it. I suppose it could be classified as urban fantasy, but I think it goes beyond that. It’s something uniquely Gaiman. 

The pacing, tone and speech patterns all follow his typical style. And I loved the characters - even the dullard Richard. I’ll be totally honest, I enjoyed Neverwhere a heck of a lot more than American Gods!

Apparently a sequel was announced last year, and I now can’t wait to read it. Being patient is hard, guys!

Ok, I now understand the hype - The House in the Cerulean Sea is perfection. Absolute perfection. Honestly, I can already tell it’s going to be my top read of the year. 

This story has a lovely timelessness to it; there is mention of cars and computers but other than that it feels like it could have taken place at any time. It’s also so light and hopeful, and really just makes you feel good by the end of it. I keep coming back to the idea that this book has the potential to become a classic - something people come back to and also look back fondly on. 

It has some really positive LGBTQ+ representation and a cast of characters you are guaranteed to fall in love with. I really do have nothing critical to say about it! 

I have no words. This graphic novel is  incredibly powerful. Published in 2017, and it’s like reading today’s news. Read it. But don’t just read the story, read the intro. Read the afterward. Read I Am Alfonso Jones. Please.

I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Unfortunately, this ended up being a DNF for me. I cannot suffer fools, and the protagonist really rubbed me the wrong way. Ah well...

This graphic novel is fantastic. In it, conjoined twins are sold by their parents to a freak show. The girls grow up with a monster of a guardian, but they find a family among the other performers. It all implodes when they attempt surgical separation and one of the girls doesn’t survive. The remaining twin is left struggling to find her place in the world. 

It sounds gloomy, but the story is actually quite uplifting. And the artwork is lovely as well.

At the end of the book, Brown includes an afterward that explains the dark history of those old shows. This added content makes the story that much more impactful. Overall it’s just a great read and I highly recommend it.
