Why haven’t I read this sooner? This is a fantastic story with twists I did not see coming. 

This was a lot darker than I had expected - I loved it. 

I read the Lucifer series first 🤷🏻‍♀️ I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to read Sandman. I’m officially hooked. 

What did I just read?! Holy smokes, what a beautifully written and incredibly dark book. I loved it - it definitely warped my brain a bit. But I’m not surprised I enjoyed it - Silvia’s last book was fantastic as well.  

The title Mexican Gothic is pretty spot on - Silvia checked all of the right boxes: a decaying setting and supernatural element, intense emotions, a splash of horror and a little bit of romance. She has created a lush world with deeply flawed characters and surrounded them with an oppressive darkness that you can’t help but feel. I think I’d describe it as a ‘heavy’ read. Gothic perfection.

This was really good - I’m interested in reading more when the next book comes out. The Netflix movie stuck pretty close to the original story btw. 

The first book was great. But in this one the central character was more concerned with getting laid than solving a murder. Made it 30% before DNF

The Book of Hidden Wonders is definitely not what I had expected - it was better. 

The story is beautifully written and starts off describing the idyllic childhood of Romilly Kemp, filled with lots of outdoor exploring and adventures. Her father is an artist, and he publishes a series of children’s books with Romilly as the star. Then life begins to change. The tone of the story gradually becomes darker as Romilly ages, as she slowly loses those that she holds dear. 

This book bends your brain a bit. The lightness early in the story had me expecting the plot to follow a certain course - but it all went sideways and left me guessing. I couldn’t put it down, and ended up reading it in one sitting. And the ending is fantastic - I totally didn’t see it coming. 

The Book of Hidden Wonders is now available, and I highly recommend it.

I was curious about the early, self published work by one of my favourite authors - and I was not disappointed! It’s great to see the evolution of his writing, and it’s a pretty funny story to boot.
